PATCH TESTING

This patient information and photographs on Patch Testing is provided by John L. Meisenheimer, M.D. a board certified Dermatologist and skin care specialist based in Orlando, Florida.  This information is not intended as a substitute for the medical advice or treatment of a dermatologist or other physician.

Patch testing is a way of identifying whether a substance that comes in contact with the skin is causing an allergic reaction. (allergic contact dermatitis)

Dr. Meisenheimer is one of the few dermatologists in the Central Florida area that does advanced patch testing.  In addition to the standard North American Screening test he offers many industry and hobby specific panels for testing if needed.

Patch testing can help differentiate between irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. The procedure involves the application of various test substances to the skin under adhesive tape that are left in place for 48 hours. The skin is then examined  24 hours later for reactions. This can help Dr. Meisenheimer decide which allergens you are allergic to and identify those that could be aggravating your rash. Dr. Meisenheimer will then be able to produce a list of skin care products that are free of the offending allergen(s).
