Frequently asked Questions Regarding Laser Hair Removal
How safe is Laser hair removal?
As with all treatments and procedures there is nothing that is risk free, but laser hair removal is considered a very low risk procedure. I have used this laser on myself as well as my staff and family members. We do test areas to make sure the laser is set properly for each individual’s skin and hair type. Potential side effects include, blistering, skin color changes, burning and stinging. These are the exception, not the general result. I evaluate all patients that are to get laser hair removal before they start the treatments. Beware of medi-spas where the “supervising doctor” is not on site.
How painful is the procedure?
Very little discomfort is noticed by most. Anesthesia is not required but we do use an air cooling system, which really helps block any discomfort you may have. The sensation is much like being lightly snapped with a small rubber band.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the location the treatments are to be done. Because hair growth rates vary from one area of the body to the other the number of treatments required to give a satisfactory cosmetic result will also vary. The Laser can only treat actively growing hairs. Because many hairs are in a resting phase at any point in time, sites that have a higher percentage of resting hairs will require more treatments.
For example, a higher percentage of hairs are actively growing on the lip than on the back. The back therefore would require more treatments. We try to advise patients prior to starting treatments the approximate number of treatments we think the area will require to get satisfactory results. PLEASE SEE THIS LIST
Is the laser hair removal permanent?
Once a hair follicle is destroyed by the laser it will no longer grow in the future. Not every follicle will be destroyed with each treatment so more than one treatment will be needed. Also, hairs that are not actively growing will also not be affected by the laser. So even after a permanent reduction a few new follicles can activate even months or years later.
How long do the treatments take?
This varies depending on the size of the area to be treated. A lip may take just a few minutes, but an entire back may take 45 minutes or longer.
What is the recovery time following the treatment?
There is really no recovery time after the treatment. You can go right
back to work or do sporting activities. We would recommend though that you
do not get sun exposure to the area for the next 48 hours.
How much does it cost?
This depends on the areas to be treated and the number of treatments you
choose. You can buy individual treatments or we also sell packages of several treatments at a reduced rate.
Is the consultation free?
Consultations for laser hair removal are free. If you are planning on having the procedure done, the test area is free as well.
