INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ATOPIC CHILD

BEDDING: 

  1. Avoid woolen blankets.
  2. Feather pillows should be avoided, use foam rubber.
  3. Foam rubber mattresses are permitted.
  4. All other mattresses should be sealed in rubberized covering.

CLOTHING:

  1. Clothing close to the skin should be non-irritating.
  2. Avoid wool next to the skin.
  3. Wash all new clothing before wearing.

TOYS:

  1. Avoid fuzzy stuffed toys or woolen toys.
  2. Toys made of, cotton, wood, rubber, plastic or paper are permitted.

PETS: 

It is best not to allow dogs, cats or birds in the house.

DUST: 

  1. Protect the child from exposure to all kinds of dust.
  2. Frequent dusting of bedroom decreases exposure.

TENSION: 

  1. Tension and nervous excitement may cause child to itch.
  2. Be careful not to be over restrictive, let a child be a child.

WEATHER:

  1. Most patients get worse in the winter due to dryness and heating.
  2. Humidifiers are helpful.

BATHING: 

  1. Once daily is adequate.
  2. Many do best bathing every other day.
  3. Avoid frequent bathing.
  4. Use Dove soap and apply moisturizer after the bath while skin is moist. For moisturizer recommendations click here.
